An excerpt from my novella in progress, "Axed Pat", published by Attitude Magazine (Issue 216, April 2012). Many thanks to Will Davis and Eoin Coveney.
When I have news of "Axed Pat", I will post it here.
Few publishers like novellas: they favour novels and think that novellas are less 'serious'. This is a huge intellectual mistake, and one probably borne of literary vanity and tradition. Novellas can become a trilogy, as has happened many times.
Frankly, a shorter book that skips along is more memorable (and entertaining) than an arduous plod of prose that grows turgid as the writer battles to hit the 400-page deadline. (There are many of those.) Rather, it is because his/her publishers have stipulated that only that may constitute a novel.
I believe the aim is quality -- not being a Word Count Queen.
